Expanding Access to Education in Zango-Sallau, Jigawa State

At Refem Millers Ltd, our commitment to sustainability goes beyond responsible sourcing, it extends to the communities at the heart of our operations.

As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives under the UEBT sustainability programme, in collaboration with some of our European partners, we constructed a fully functional school in Zango-Sallau under Ringim LGA, Jigawa State; a community that previously had no access to formal education facilities.

For years, children in Zangon-Sallau were required to travel several kilometres daily to attend school, creating significant barriers to consistent learning and development. This challenge not only affected school attendance but also limited opportunities for the community’s long-term growth.
With the completion of this project, we have helped bridge that gap—bringing education closer to home and creating a safer, more accessible learning environment for children in the community.

This initiative reflects our broader mission: to create lasting value across our sourcing regions by investing in people, supporting livelihoods, and fostering inclusive development.

We remain committed to identifying and addressing critical needs within our communities, ensuring that our impact is both meaningful and sustainable.

Social Responsibility

A key part of REFEM’s vision for its future involves giving back to the communities where we source our materials. Our regular CSR initiatives include but not limited to the following: Direct cash payout to farmers, provisions of community water boreholes, construction of classrooms, gender equality programmes, soil fertility checks and restoration training, distribution of first aid kits, distribution of PPEs, tree planting programmes and waste management programmes.

Partnering With Community

Our corporate social responsibility activities are directly targeted at improving the lives of our fellow Nigerians. REFEM had overseen the drilling of a 300-foot borehole, providing safe drinking water for 50,000 villagers who had been without for years in Kaniyaka Village, Ajingi LGA, Kano State; Garan Village, Jahun LGA, Jigawa State and Zango Sallau Village, Ringim LGA, Jigawa State. REFEM is honoured to be able to contribute to the health and prosperity of local communities as we work to bring the best of Nigerian agricultural exports to the world.
