An International Agri-Export Partner

After acquiring years of experience in international banking, including managing the exports desk of a leading Nigerian firm, Femi Akinwumi developed a keen interest in the country’s agro commodities. Spurred on by this fledgeling interest, Akinwumi conducted a study on Nigeria’s non-oil export market, finding that key players in the industry were almost exclusively exporting raw produce, leaving refinement — and the subsequent value creation and markup — to resellers in Europe, South America or North America.

Seeing an opportunity for the creation of a full circle agro exporter that could compete globally, REFEM was established in 1999 and began operations in 2006 to provide the highest global standard of tea and food ingredients to international markets.

REFEM recently oversaw the drilling of a 300-foot borehole in Jigawa State, providing safe drinking water for 50,000 villagers who had been without for years.
